A bad start to the game saw Falkirk having to struggle to keep their Edinburgh hosts from scoring. Derek Morrison then went on to threaten with his shot at goal which hit the side of the goal in the seventh minute, followed by Gregor Maxwell and David Jewell both with unsuccessful chances to open the scoring. After the break, Falkirk broke the deadlock thanks to Ross Crerar, followed soon after with a second, from a good build-up by Scott Coventry. Grange came back and were initially denied a score as Kevin Cummings between the uprights had the road to goal covered, but they later went on to score twice, the first from a short corner after they stick-tackled their way into the circle. Gregor Maxwell did not give up and was devastated to see his shot at goal hit the upright and rebound clear.
Barry Warner and Iain Cameron had early chances to open the Falkirk Club's tally on the artificial surface at St George's School in Edinburgh, and sustained pressure saw Cameron again close, followed by Tom Russell at a corner award. Grange came back to threaten and David Craig had an essential clearance off the line to keep the team's composure. Twenty minutes into the game, Iain Cameron finally reached the scoresheet, but Grange again threatened to level, with Craig Callahan making a useful clearance at the back. Barry Warner opened the second half in threatening manner, followed by a good ball from Jonathan Anderson to Tom Russell for their second of the game. Falkirk did not give up and Russell and Callahan were proving dangerous to the Edinburgh defence right up to the final whistle.
Falkirk did open the scoring from
a Stuart Gardner ball, played through Ross Crerar, to Jamie Ballantine, taking
a break from goalkeeping duties, who slammed it home. The Fifers went up the
park to equalise almost immediately, but from a penalty corner award, Falkirk
again went in front thanks to the strike by Stuart Taylor, after a good ball
from Russell Sommerville. In the second half, Carnegie went on to stamp their
authority on the game from three corner awards.
Falkirk GHG VI 1
Peebles 1
The young Falkirk side played this game pressurising the side from the borders
almost non-stop with getting their goal from an early penalty corner routine
that resulted in young Chris Thompson getting his first goal for the club
at the back post. Although Falkirk tried everything they could, the ball would
not go in the goal again, it would hit the post, go just past, it would hit
the keeper, or the keeper would save. The second half was different with Peebles
pushing for ten to fifteen minutes. Falkirk replied again pushing Peebles
to their own half with penalty corner after penalty corner, ten minutes from
the end Peebles broke through the home side defence and got the equaliser.
Falkirk tried to get the winning goal but to no avail this was a good game
of hockey for both sides.
