Waverley Inveresk 3
Falkirk made an impressive start against the league leaders at Forresters, attacking from the first whistle and putting the Waverley defence under a great deal of pressure. Strong play in midfield left Waverley will very little in the way of attacking options, and despite a lot of play around the box, Falkirk were unable to create many clear chances, a good run by Iain Fraser was as close as they came before the home side took the lead. A ball into the box from Stafford Dickson was deflected into the path of Stevie Sutton, who shot across the keeper into the bottom corner. Falkirk held this lead until half time, but at the start of the second half, Waverley pushed for an equaliser and only some fine saves from Scott Morrison preserved the home side's lead. Just as Falkirk appeared to have weathered the storm, a quick break from Waverly exposed the defence and gave them an equaliser. Having put so much into the first half, Falkirk were unable to sustain that level of play, and despite the constant running of Douglas Nicol, gaps started to appear. For a 15 minute spell Waverley passed the ball well and exploited gaps and any mistake that was made by Falkirk to score twice more, before closing out the game for a 2 goal victory.
In this, their penultimate outing in the Regional league, the seconds found this a tight game. Despite soaking up much pressure, the departure of their Captain through injury after six minutes did not help matters, and their Edinburgh hosts went ahead just before half time. Scott Coventry put the teams on level pegging after five minutes of the second half, but two more scores in the closing minutes of the game as the team tired, saw the points go to Melvilles.

People like to win their games, and some do lots to ensure it happens. It is interesting to compare the scoreline with the game played in the first of the season, and to find it was a draw with two goals apiece tells all. This was a strong Edinburgh side that dominated the game, and were three ahead at the break, though David Jewell had hit the post. Their short routines were cracking, and something for Falkirk to marvel at, such was their finesse, something strangely not so often seen in the first division of East League. David Sharp and Jason Park had saves off the line, and with several cracking saves by Kevin Cummings in goal, these all prevented the scoreline going higher.
Two minutes had hardly been clocked when Iain Cameron put Falkirk ahead, and Scott McNeill and Tom Russell tried for A second. Despite several good chances for Cameron, the scoreline stayed, as it was into the second half. Mark Russell linked well with Cameron to pressure, but it was Barry Warner who found the net from a penalty Corner award.
This game started with Falkirk
fielding four adults and the rest of the players under 18 against a complete
adult team, but this did not make any difference as the young home side took
the game to the visitors and showed them how to play hockey. Falkirk opened
the scoring through a pass from Danny Gibney, which found Chris Taylor lurking
in the goal circle to push the ball past the visiting keeper after a miss-hit.
The second again from a Gibney-Taylor combination resulted in Taylor at full
stretch, as normal, hitting the ball past the outstretched keeper for number
two. Grange wakened up and replied with two goals just before half time to
go in equal. The second half started like the first with Falkirk pushing for
more goals which resulted in a penalty flick which Gibney expertly put away,
during this time Ian Webster had several shots at goals saved by the Grange
keeper which would have resulted in Falkirk being six in front. Gibney in
other hand scored his second to make it four. Five minutes from the end young
Andrew Malcolm who has been close in previous weeks produced the goal of the
day and his first for the club with excellent positioning sense at the back
post receiving a pass from Ian Webster. Andrew slotted the ball past the Grange
keeper who could only look on as a spectator as he knew he was beaten with
an expertly taken goal, first of many we hope.
