Match reports for 10/10/04
Falkirk GHG 7
St Andrews University 3
Falkirk finally hit the goal trail in this re-arranged game against the students
at Linlithgow, and treated the spectators to an entertaining match. The home
side were up for this right from the start, and scored in the opening minutes,
Craig Gove rattling in for the fourth successive game. The lead was doubled
shortly after when Stafford Dickson spectacularly volleyed home into the roof
of the net after a penalty corner. With Falkirk getting a bit over confident,
St Andrew's exploited gaps at the back to pull a goal back immediately, but
Falkirk regained their 2 goal advantage when Dickson scored from another penalty
corner. Falkirk managed to get a fourth from yet another penalty corner, Michael
Watson converting this time, but let the students pull a goal back immediately
yet again. Just before half time, a quick free hit from Gove allowed Watson
to set up Chris Anderson, but his shot from the top of the box just went over
the bar. The home side were disappointed to have played so well, but not put
the game out of reach, and started the second half determined to make amends.
Good play from Watson and Gove straight from the restart earned a penalty corner,
but Douglas Nicol's flick was well saved by the keeper. With St Andrew's still
causing some problems for the home defence, the game was in the balance until
2 goals in 5 minutes sealed the game. Craig Gove broke up a Uni attack and sent
a long ball to Watson, who drew the keeper before squaring for Anderson to score,
before Nicol embarked on an unstoppable 50 yard run, and squared to Anderson
for his second tap in of the day. A third university goal arrived after a cruel
deflection spun the ball into the net, but the scoring was completed with 8
minutes to go, when Watson got his second after good build up play from Gove.
A good weekend for the local side that saw them hit the top of the league for
the first time in over 2 years.
