Carnegie Colts 3
Falkirk GHG III 2
In this East District Division 2 clash between the 3rd XI and a Carnegie side, Falkirk were 2-0 and in control at half time, only too end up with no league points. Only a month ago, against a Carnegie team, Falkirk had been winning 2-0 at half time and went on to lose 5-3. Although the score line in this game was different, once again Carnegie ended up with all the league points. The first attack of the match produced the visitors first goal, coming from a right-hand side long corner in the opening minutes. Scott McNeill put a dangerous ball across the face of goal which Barry Warner finished well, getting ahead of the defence to poke the ball home. The second for Falkirk followed shortly after, with Craig Callahan running at the Carnegie defence before putting in an excellent ball to the back post, where Iain Cameron was able to force the ball over the line. Despite being 2-0 up, the Falkirk team sustained a lot of pressure, with Jamie Ballantine in goals producing a series of first class saves and Chris Dyer winning every tackle. Into the second half Falkirk were immediately on the back foot, having to defend wave after wave of Carnegie pressure. Falkirk chances were few and far between, with Danny Gibney coming close from an “interesting” short corner routine and Barry Warner shooting wide from the top of the D. The inevitable happened and Carnegie scored their first from a poorly defended short corner and then shortly after equalised. Despite commendable effort from Dyer who was having a great game and Davie Craig, Falkirk conceded a final goal in the last 10 minutes and a lack of fitness proved to be the final hurdle with the 3s not able to get back into the game. In all a disappointing score line given the first half lead, yet probably a fair reflection of the game. This fixture, normally a fiery affair, was played in the best of spirits, with both teams perhaps looking forward to Christmas. The 3rd XI would like to thank the young Carnegie player who kindly offered to umpire for them.
