Falkirk GHG 3
Missing several regular players the 3rd XI travelled to St George’s School to take on Grange VI in this East District encounter. The Falkirk GHG side, made up off 3rd XI players and players borrowed from 5th XI played some magnificent hockey and were very worthy winners romping home with a brilliant 6-0 victory. The first half got off slowly with Duncan Kehoe looking lively, running at speed towards the grange defence on every opportunity. In a fairly even first period nothing fell the way of Falkirk, with only Danny Gibney short corners really being any threat at goal. Dougie Smith was immense, as always, stopping a goal-bound effort on the line and Jamie Ballantine made some crucial saves to keep the score at 0-0 into halftime. The second half belonged to Falkirk, as the 3rd XI were quite magnificent with their touch and go hockey proving too much for an experienced Grange side. Chris Brodie opened the scoring. A well hit strike was sent goalwards by Brodie and with the aid of a massive deflection ended up in the back of the Grange net. The second goal was created by Duncan Kehoe, his energy and determination quite simply unstoppable as he ran with the ball, past several Grange players before playing it into the path of Gibney, who slipped the ball in at the post with great skill. At the other end of the park Jamie Ballantine made several important kicks to keep Grange out. The third goal for Falkirk was another created by the hard work of Kehoe, who picked up a loose ball and played a neat one-two with Jonathon Nugent before picking out an unmarked Chris Brodie. His shot looked to be going wide but Danny Gibney was on hand to slam it home for his second and Falkirk’s 3rd goal. By this time the 3rd XI were in complete control and only a hand injury to Mark Stewart looked to have put a damper on the atmosphere. However Falkirk were not finished there, scoring a goal coming courtesy of the Grange defence. When a quick hit was misplaced to Duncan Kehoe he simply ran into the D and fired home an unstoppable shot for his first 3rd XI goal. Javed Afzal came close to scoring, as did Stephen Macdonald but before long the 5th goal came for Falkirk again from the stick of top-scorer Danny Gibney. Jonathon Nugent, who was having a great game down the left wing, put in an excellent cross which was met with a calm finish below the goalkeeper for Gibney’s hatrick. A 6th goal followed for the Falkirk side when a right hand side hit was played to Afzal. He chased it and crossed with precision to Danny Gibney to make it 6-0 and score his 4th of the game. In all a brilliant performance from front to back for the 3rd XI, with the contribution of the defence, stopping goals at crucial moments easy to forget. A grateful Captain would like to thank all those who agreed to come and play, all of whom were magnificent.
As the score reflects the home side dominated this game from start to finish
when the scoring started with Alex MacFadyen grabbing his first of the day
from a well-crossed ball from Javed Afzal the second came from Jonny Anderson.
Suddenly as from nowhere MIM waltzed through the home side and scored an excellent
goal, which did come from nothing. This only inspired Chris Brodie on his
collection for the day added a third. MIM playing with some of the home sides
reserves, due to them turning up players short and no umpire, thanks to Scott
McNeill for umpiring the whole game on his own, unfortunately lost a player
to an infringement, which is unusual for young players as it is mostly, at
this level, adults that get sent off. Jonny Anderson then added the fourth
for the halftime break. The home dominated the second half and added another
five which could have been more the goals came from Chris Brodie with another
three and Anderson and MacFadyen with one apiece. This puts Chris Brodie and
Jonny Anderson on ten goals apiece with both in the running for top goal scorer
for the season.
