Match reports for 23/4/05
Falkirk GHG 1
Granite City Wanderers 3
Granite City arrived in Falkirk on the final day of the season for the third
year in succession, this time needing a win to keep their play-off hopes alive.
It didn't look too good for them early on as Falkirk were awarded a number of
penalty corners. After Stafford Dickson's first effort was blocked, Michael
Watson gave Falkirk the lead from a penalty corner, drilling the ball home after
deceiving two defenders. Douglas Nicol almost added a second soon after, but
his reverse stick flick flew across goal and missed the far post. Granite City
were determined not to let the game slip away, and the visitors equalised just
before half time from a penalty corner. Yet again, the second half of a match
proved to be Falkirk's undoing and yet again, it was decisive converting of
penalty corners that made the difference. Despite Robert Thomson's second penalty
stroke save in as many games, and a brilliant one handed stop from a blistering
shot heading for the roof of the net, the home side concede two further goals
from corners to finish their season on a low note.
