The penultimate game of the season saw Falkirk GHG 3rd's take on Carnegie 8th's in this Reserve Plate quarter final. The 3rd’s path to the quarter finals was helped by a series of concessions. It was always going to be difficult with seven regular players missing for a variety of reasons. Several youngsters were called up from the 5th XI yet this game was too much too soon, with Falkirk GHG being defeated 5-1 to go out of the plate. The game could have been so different with the home side having a few early chances yet they were unable to convert any and when Carnegie took the lead there was no doubting the final result. A single goal from Javed Afzal, his first for the 3rd XI was the only credit any of the players could take from a shocking performance.
Falkirk GHG IV 3
Stirling Uni II 7
The uni team started as they meant to continue at the Bathgate pitch with two quick goals, Falkirk tried their hardest but nothing much came of it however. Ian Forbes eventually opened the scoring casually picking up the ball in a goalmouth scramble on his reverse stick and put it past an outstreched keeper. The whole Falkirk team worked relentlessly to get back in the game and the chances were there but no one could take them, Stirling put a third past the home keeper at blistering pace to leave him no chance. The second half was pretty much same as the first again the Uni squad putting two past GHG in the space of 5 mins. It was an inspired Alex McFadyen who came to the fore with 2 goals, the first on the counter coming out of the Falkirk defence silky passing in midfield and lovely running and stick work up front. His second a cooly slotted penalty flick which sent the uni keeper completely the wrong way. The fourth team captain would like to thank all his players for their hard work and commitment over the last season because without them there would be no team well done boys and thanks again.
Falkirk GHG V 3
Inverleith Juniors 1
This being the penultimate league game before the end of the season the home side just had to draw to win Division 3B, but they went that one better with a decisive win in revenge for the earlier defeat in the season. With another rearranged team due to injuries and holidays Falkirk started with young Danny Gibney taking the mantle of centre forward from captain Chris Taylor, who, in turn took up the whistle to umpire and young Jonathon Nugent bolstering up the midfield, which in all made it a formidable squad. The game started with both sides playing some nice hockey with the ball being passed most times to where it was meant to go, but it was an end-to-end game with both keepers in excellent form. It was the endless dribbling from the youngsters of Inverleith that was their downfall with the home side winning the ball after they ran out of options on where to pass the ball, but it was six minutes before half-time before the deadlock was broken when Chris Thompson struck a sideline ball which found midfield general Ross Drummond who dummied the Inverleith defence for the ball to travel to Chris Brodie who made no mistake with the open goal to claim his first legal goal of the day. The second half started the same as the first but then Inverleith stepped up a gear and Craig Malcolm in goals produced his usual excellent display of goalkeeping, which only inspired the Falkirk defence and midfield to play hockey. The second goal of the day came from the stick of young Gibney who was inspirational with his display of hockey to leave the Inverleith keeper stranded halfway through the second half. Seven minutes later up stepped Chris Brodie to get his second and then Falkirk took their foot of the pedal and settled into a holding pattern which came unstuck five minutes from the end at a penalty corner where a shot from the visitors which was wickedly deflected off Malcolm’s pads into the top of the net for their consolation goal. This result only helped the Falkirk side to know that they have so far scored more goals this season that they have ever done and they have a plus goal difference for the first time ever of fourteen this has been a good season.
