Match reports for 1/4/06

Falkirk GHG 3
Aberdeen GSFP 1

It was no April fool as Falkirk won their first match since the first of October and boosted their chances of avoiding relegation. For the second week in a row, Falkirk got off to a flier and netted within 2 minutes. Craig Gove's pass found Michael Watson at the top of the box, and he stepped past a defender before firing a shot into the bottom corner. Falkirk grabbed a second goal a few minutes later, Craig Gove burst into the box and although his first effort was saved, he reacted quickly to flick high into the net. Falkirk were in total control at this point and should have increased their lead when Douglas Nicol burst into the box, but he shot weakly at the keeper. Gordon Anderson was next to try his luck from a corner, but his flick was spectacularly saved by the visiting keeper. The Falkirk defence had kept Grammar pretty quiet until this point, but were unable to prevent the visitors from pulling a goal back from a penalty corner. From this point on the game was evenly balanced, with Rennie, Dickson, Miller and Moran keeping the Falkirk lead intact with some solid defending. The second half got off to a slower start than the first, with both sides having large spells of possession. A strong run from Chris Anderson opened up the visiting defence, but a last gasp interception prevented Watson from connecting with his cross. With time running out, a third goal was vital for the home side, and it eventually arrived from a penalty corner, Michael Watson firing a shot straight through the keepers legs from the top of the box for his second goal. On the final whistle, Grammar looked like they had grabbed a consolation score, but it was chalked off by the umpire - given Falkirk's luck, something that wouldn't have happened had it made a difference to the result.

Inverleith Juniors 5
Falkirk GHG 4

On this, their last league outing of the season, the Falkirk team travelled to Currie and had an early chance in front of goal in the 3rd minute, but it was not to be. Inverleiuth came back, and Douglas Smith deflected a shot at goal round the post in the 17th minute. Falkirk's next chance at a short corner saw Robert, Falkirk's new Dutch signing flick at goal, with David Humphreys unlucky with his reverse-stick shot, having picked up the rebound. The Edinburgh hosts scored from a penalty corner, and in the second half made it two in less than two minutes, lifting the ball over the body of Chris Taylor in goal. Falkirk clawed their way back into the game, after Alex McFadyen dribbled his way through the D to score, only to see Inverleith score in a similar fashion to make it three. Liam Robertson pulled Falkirk back into the game to make it 3 - 2, but another short corner put the hosts 2 ahead, and another dribbled run made it 5 - 2. Falkirk were not finished however, and at a short corner award, McFadyen made it 3, and a fourth certainly worried the hosts when Liam Robertson again hit home. Now with only a one goal lead, only determined defending saw them hold onto this in the dying minutes of the game.
