Match reports for 10/9/05
Waverley Inveresk Trinity 4
Falkirk GHG 2
Falkirk traveled to Edinburgh to face Waverley in the first match of the season, and returned home on the end of a comprehensive defeat. The manner of the victory suggests that Waverley may be the team to beat this season, but it was a disappointing performance from the local side. From the start, Waverley controlled possession, and although a number of balls were sent across the Falkirk goal, Robert Thomson was not troubled. Falkirk took the lead against the run of play when James Moran's strong run was halted by a reckless challenge, although both teams were surprised when a penalty was awarded. Stafford Dickson confidently scored from the spot to give Falkirk a half time lead. Waverley continued to dominate play at the start of the second half, and claimed an equaliser after breaking up a Falkirk attack and quickly countering. The home side's second goal came from a penalty corner flick that appeared to be going high and wide before getting deflected in by a Falkirk stick. Shortly after Waverley claimed their third, from another soft penalty award, canceling out the one the visitors had received in the first half. Waverley were in control at this point, but attempted to let Falkirk back into the game as they were reduced to 10 after one of the goal scorers was given a red card after a couple of outbursts towards the umpires. Undeterred, Waverley netted a fourth from another penalty corner. Falkirk pulled a goal back with 10 minutes to go after Dickson's shot was blocked on the line, and he stepped up himself to convert his second penalty of the day. Despite the manner in which 3 of the 4 goals were lost, there can be no argument that the better side won on the day.
