Match reports for 13/8/05
For their first friendly of the new season, the seconds travelled to Glasgow to play the Asian side with whom Falkirk have developed a frienmdship over the years. Playing on the astro surface at Clydesdale’s Titwood pitch, the seconds were quickly on the offensive, when in the sixth minute, a Scott Coventry ball found Captain Gregor Maxwell ready to pop the ball away to claim the opener. Shields came back quickly, but Jason Park was there to clear off the line at a pemalty corner award. Falkirk’s second came from a well-worked routine with Derek Morrison striking a bullet shot from the top of the shooting circle, though Scott Coventry lays claim to a topuch before the ball entered the goal. Falkirk had some near things with Jonathan Kellar and Craig MacDonald coming close. With some of their regular squad unavailable, it was fortunate that George Hogg agreed at short notice to help out on the day. Shields put pressure on Falkirk and some messy occasions at the back might have seen them reach the scoresheet sooner, but for good work by Jamie Ballantine, newly promoted to be the second’s goalminder, and club chairman David Sharp. Falkirk’s third was a long time in coming, but a ball from Maxwell found Craig MacDonald with time in the box to strike an unsaveable shot into goal – this good for Craig who is a goalkeeper himself under normal circumstances. After the break, Shields came back to threaten, and their stickwork, ball control and inter-passing was a treat to watch. It was no surprise they clawed two goals back - one from sustained pressure, and the second from a long hard hit into the circle, deftly touched into goal. A good gameas always, with both sides anxious to shake off the cobwebs of a summer break.
