Match reports for 4/2/06
The 3rd XI made the trip to the Borders to face a Reivers side who’s only defeat of the season had been inflicted by Falkirk themselves in the first league of this encounter. Falkirk knew they faced a tough game and early on showed their intent with a series of short corners with Paul Paton and Liam Robertson coming close. Kenny Sharp in defence made two crucial challenges as the scoreline remained blank. This game was becoming a tactical battle with both midfields trying to outfox each other and Davie Gallagher was his usual inspiring self helping the play flow up the field. At the other end Craig Malcolm in goal never looked in danger with Paul Paton and Alan Jenkins, who was playing his first game for the 3rd XI, both looking in form winning every tackle. However Falkirk would be left to rue missed chances when they went a goal down from a well worked short corner routine.
Into the second half and the Falkirk side battled hard and were duly rewarded
when a fine long ball from Paton was landed on the stick of Iain Cameron who
scored his first of the season. The game was on a knife edge and Craig Malcolm
in goal showed he was more than a match for anything Reivers could throw at
him with a tremendous diving save to turn the ball out to safety. Falkirk
looked the team in control and took the lead when a brilliant run by Davie
Gallagher who played the ball to Craig Gove at the top of the D. Gove showed
real ability as he flicked the ball into the top corner for a brilliant goal
to give Falkirk the lead. Reivers were to push forward in numbers and it took
a truly magnificent save from Craig Malcolm to stop Reivers scoring. The Falkirk
keeper turned the ball over the bar from point blank range when a goal looked
a certainly. Some stout defending saw Falkirk hold on to the lead and return
home with the points and a brilliant win
Erskines Melville III 6
Falkirk GHG V 1
Falkirk were delighted that Duncan Kehoe, home for the weekend from the airforce,
made himself available for his old team, to open the scoring in this game
on the Mark Erskine pitch, and score what was to be Falkirk’s only,
and consolation goal against the league leaders. After this score, Erskines
went about their business, and gradually the scoreline began to climb, despite
the best efforts of the Falkirk back line, where Simon Tennant, John McPherson
and Mathew Morley were doing their best, but without Chris Taylor saving a
shot at goal after a penalty corner award, the scoreline would have been higher.
Kehoe and Stuart Taylor did harass the Melvilles backs, and Simor Robertson
covered a lot of ground in midfield to add to the better second half performance
which saw the block put on further scores against them.
