Match reports for 11/3/07

Falkirk GHG III 2
Menzieshill III 3

The 3rd XI faced Menzieshill 3's in the last 16 of the Reserve Cup. Sunday games are always a lottery, with the teams often in no way resembling the Saturday line-ups and it was an unfamiliar side that took to the park to compete his match. The opening spell of the match was even, with little to choose between the two sides, however it was Menzieshill who were to open the scoring from a penalty corner. Falkirk have shown their battling qualities this season and following some good play from Stuart McNeill, won a penalty corner which went narrowly over the crossbar. Danny Gibney was looking lively upfront and he combined well with Alex McFadyen, who’s goal bound shot was kicked off the line by the defender. Gibney made no mistake from the penalty spot, slotting the ball home to equalise. Again Menzieshill attacked and only an excellent stop from Chris Taylor prevented a goal. However, the visitors were soon to take the lead when a shot in was flicked into the roof of the net. Again Falkirk fought back and the midfield trio of Trodden, Barton and Drummond were looking lively. Some excellent link-up play saw a delightful ball into the box which Gibney again slotted home for his second of the match. Iain Forbes on the right hand side was looking lively and causing all sorts of the problems for the defenders. The second half was played at much the same pace as the first with chances falling to Harper and McFadyen, both of whom came close to scoring. The game was to turn in favour of Menzieshill when they were awarded a series of memorable penalty corner decisions and from this they took the lead. With the decisions having soured the pleasant atmosphere the game had previously been played in, Falkirk stepped up the pace and were unlucky not to equalise on several occasions. These missed chances were to prove costly as the umpire brought the game to a close. With some good hockey on display, and plenty of goal-mouth action, this game was memorable for the wrong reasons.
