Match reports for 16/12/06

Inverleith A 2
Falkirk GHG II 5

Falkirk travelled to Edinburgh to play Inverlieth missing some important players for this last league clash of 2006. Thanks to other teams in the club though a squad of 12 was assembled to try and record the 2nd's first league win of the season. Thanks to a well worked short corner Stafford Dickson slotted home Falkirk's opener, but despite having an extra man Falkirk conceded 2 quick goals to trail just 15 minutes into the game. The rest of the half was an evenly fought contest, and after a nice move down the right involving Stuart McNeill, Graham Miller fired home the Falkirk equaliser. After the break Falkirk started to take the initiative and despite missing a penalty, Gregor Maxwell's second half hat-trick sealed a 5 - 2 victory for the travelling Falkirk team. A Merry Christmas and Happy New year to all who have played and umpired for the 2nds this year, and hope to see you all playing well in 2007.

Inverleith B 1
Falkirk GHG III 1

Playing in their final game off 2006, the 3rd XI were missing 5 regulars and knew the trip to Currie High was going to be difficult. The 3rd XI’s recent record at Currie High has been poor and Inverleith were performing well in the league. In the early stages off the match the Falkirk side looked more dangerous and duly took the lead early into the half. The goal came from a fine run down the right hand side by John Russell. Russell cut the ball back along the goal-line, where Davie Sharp helped it to the stick of Ross Connell, who made no mistake with his finish for his first goal of the season. Falkirk looked to double their lead but couldn’t find a way through the packed midfield. However, things were to swing in Inverleith’s favour when Falkirk were reduced to 10 players. Chris Taylor in goals made three absolutely top class saves to prevent Inverleith making their numerical advantage count. At the other end John Russell again looked dangerous providing cut-backs on two occasions to Davie Sharp who came close to doubling Falkirk’s lead. In the second half there was little to choose between the two sides. Falkirk had two clear chances to increase the scoring when Davie Sharp found himself one-on-one with the keeper twice, but on both occasions the Inverleith keeper made two good blocks. Again Chris Taylor in goal produced another outstanding save to prevent the home side from equalising. When it looked like a single goal might be enough for Falkirk, Inverleith did equalise from the penalty spot and take a share of the points. Although Falkirk were upset not to win the game, they can take heart that they played their system well and created chances and on another day would have won this game comfortably. Captain Scott McNeill would like to thank everyone who has played and umpired for the 3rd XI in 2006 and wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
