Match reports for 2/12/06

Watsonains III 5
Falkirk GHG II 2

Another game another missed chance to pick up a first league win of the season. Falkirk travelled to George Watson's College on Saturday to play this game in the early evening. Despite starting well thanks to a well worked short corner routine, which saw Derek Morrison finish off a neat pass from Paul Paton, Falkirk found themselves 2 - 1 down at the half. Turning round Falkirk knew they would have to compete better and try to find the short passing game that seems to have deserted them since the preseason friendlies, but despite a goal mid way through the second half from David Jewell this wasn't enough for Falkirk who were eventually beaten 5 - 2.

Watsonians IV 2
Falkirk GHG III 4

After having dominated their last two league points and finishing on the losing side, the 3rd XI were more determined than ever to correct this. Captain Scott McNeill celebrated his 20th birthday on the day of the game and 3 points from a difficult away fixture against Watsonians were prominent on his birthday wish list. The match started with the now customary Falkirk pressure as Danny Gibney and Liam Robertson combined well to give Alan McDonald a chance to open the scoring, the pacey winger broke past the defence only to see his goal bound shot saved by the keeper. Falkirk were in ascendancy for much of the opening spell but on the few occasions Watsonians attacked the defence line of McNeill, Smith and Macdonald stood strong, not giving the Edinburgh side much space to find an opening. It was Falkirk who broke the deadlock with their first penalty corner goal of the season. Liam Robertson stopped the push out and found Dougie Smith in space. The sweeper made no mistake, blasting the ball home for his first of the season. Alan McDonald was a constant threat to the Watsonians defence and it was from one of his lung bursting runs that he found space in the D to slot home past the keeper from a brilliant Danny Gibney cross. Watsonians looked to get back into the game and only Craig Malcolm in the Falkirk goal prevented them scoring on two occasions but as the half wore on Watsonians broke through the defence to score. However with the last hit of the ball in the half John Russell scored from an impossible angle to give Falkirk a 3-1 lead into half time. The second half saw Watsonians come at Falkirk from the restart and only some outstanding battling from Joe Trodden, who was excellent in the heart of the midfield, saw Watsonians finding no space. As the half wore on Falkirk found a fourth goal. Danny Gibney, who had run his heart out up front was again provider, playing a defence splitting pass to Alan McDonald who cleverly slotted home from a tight angle. Watsonians pulled a goal back from a penalty corner, but Falkirk still looked comfortable. Craig Harper, who was having his best game for the 3rd XI on the left hand side of midfield, went on a Jonny Anderson-style run, as he passed 3 defenders before hitting a shot narrowly wide. In the final seconds Danny Gibney thought he had added a 5th but his strike was ruled out from an infringement.
