Match reports for 27/1/07Erskine Stewarts Melville III 2
Falkirk GHG III 1The 3rd XI’s stop/start season continued when they were narrowly defeated by a good Stewart Melvilles side at Mary Erskine. The game got off to a flying start with Iain Cameron and Jonny Anderson coming close to linking well upfront and only some brave defending preventing the pair from finding an opening. However, quickly the home side started to dominate proceedings with Falkirk being forced into their own half. The Falkirk keeper made several excellent saves to keep the scoreline blank. As the half wore on, Falkirk seemed to gain some control of proceedings with Robert Spekman and Joe Trodden controlling the midfield area and making openings. It was Jonny Anderson who came closest to scoring when his cheeky flicked effort was acrobatically touched over the bar by the home keeper. At the back Danny Gibney, playing as sweeper for the day, didn’t miss a tackle as he bossed the defence in his usual dominant manner. The second half couldn’t have started worse for Falkirk when they were caught on the break as Stewart Melvilles took the lead. To the 3rd XI’s credit they came back battling and firstly Jonny Anderson had a shot bounce of the keeper and run along the goalline and then Iain Cameron came close when his snapshot narrowly missed target following some good work from Stuart McNeill. Falkirk deservedly equalised when Cameron worked hard to win a penalty corner. Danny Gibney’s well flicked effort was saved by the keeper by Iain Cameron followed up with a good backstick finish. The 3rd XI pushed on in search for a winner and Robert Spekman saw two efforts well saved as the game heated up. However when a draw looked on the cards Stewart Melvilles snatched a winner, when unluckily the ball rebounded off the post and fell straight at the feet of the striker. Although it was disappointing to lose the match, the Falkirk side can take consolation from their battling performance against a very good side.
The visitors from Kinross travelled to Linlithgow to continue their unbeaten run and from the result of the last fixture. A more determined and match ready Falkirk side decided to turned up, although after only 1 1/2 mins Kinross opened the scoring from a messy short corner. Passing hockey was the name of the game and it was looking good for the visitors but resolute defending from Graeme Pitcaithly, Scott Usher and the 2 vetrans in the centre Willie Simpson and Graham Miller soaked up the pressure more than adequately. The midfield of David Ferguson, Derek Morrison, Derry Barton, Neil Mcfadyen, and Alex Mcfadyen more than countered the Kinross side. Falkirk drew level from a short corner slotted in by David Ferguson. Kinross were reduced to ten men which Falkirk took advantage of from a lovely goal by Alex Mcfadyen making the score 2-1. Not to be outdone efforts by Chris Brodie and Ross Dickson were thwarted by the visiting defence and keeper. 2-1 quickly became 2-2, then a crisp hit by Dave Sharp from top D saw 3-2 for Falkirk, then lovely running and selfless passing saw Alex netting his 2nd of the day. With 10 minutes to go a short corner was expensively converted to bolster Kinross but they were unable to take advantage of this and the game finished with a Falkirk win.
