Match reports for 31/3/07

Waverley Inveresk Trinity III 2
Falkirk GHG III 0

The 3rd XI finished their season with an away trip to Pinkie, a venue they have had little success on in the last few years. With results having gone their way the previous weekend, the Falkirk side made the trip knowing they were already safe from relegation. Missing a host of players from throughout the team it was always going to be difficult against a Waverley Inveresk side who fielded a very strong team with their former 1st XI captain playing in the centre of the midfield. The game started very poorly for Falkirk when Waverley rocketed at the visitors from the offset and the 3rd XI struggled to get possession in a midfield being dominated by one Waverley player in particular. Waverley opened the scoring from a penalty corner and then quickly scored a second, with both goals coming from the stick of the Waverley centre midfielder. However, Falkirk started to win some possession as Waverley dropped the pace of the game and chances fell to Danny Gibney and Scott Coventry, both of whom saw the home keeper make magnificent saves. With the last hit of the half, Waverley were awarded a hotly disputed penalty flick and as a result of their protests, Falkirk were reduced to 10 players. However, Craig Malcolm in goals produced a top-class save when he saved the flick. With only 10 players at the start of the second half, Falkirk actually seemed to start dominating the game and were using their pressure to create openings in the D, with they couldn’t turn into real chances. With their full quota of players restored Falkirk dominance in the game continued and only a superb stop from the Waverley keeper prevented Ross Connell from repeating his scoring exploits of the previous week. However tempers were to come to the boil and Falkirk were permanently reduced to 10 players as they battled to find a way back into this match. Despite Waverley using their numerical advantage to gain some control of this game Craig Malcolm in goal prevented further scoring. After a terrible opening spell Falkirk can be pleased with their efforts to play passing hockey as the tried to find a way back into the match. However, the whole squad much learn discipline and self-control if they are to challenge for the league next season. Captain Scott McNeill would like to thank everyone who has played and umpired for the 3rd XI in the season 2006/2007, and wish everyone involved in hockey an enjoyable summer break in the hope they come back revitalised next season for a league challenge.
