Carnegie IV 3
Falkirk GHG III 1

The 3rd XI travelled to Rosyth for a very difficult away trip to Carnegie. The Falkirk outfit were boosted by the return of John Russell, whilst Iain Cameron managed to shake of an ankle injury to allow captain Scott McNeill the novelty of being able to name what might be considered a regular 3rd XI side, with only Dougie Smith missing for this outing. The game couldn’t have started any worse for the 3rd XI who conceded an early goal when the defence were caught out by an aerial ball, which allowed the Carnegie striker time to place his shot beyond the helpless Jamie O’Neill in goal. However Falkirk began to win some dominance in the midfield, with Robert Spekman and Ross Drummond linking well and creating a series of penalty corners for the Falkirk side. Danny Gibney came close to scoring, only for the defender to block well and then Ross Dickson played a neat ball to Gibney who’s flick flew past the post. Iain Cameron was next to test the home keeper, but was unlucky when his first shot and then rebound follow-up were both well saved. Falkirk’s spell of dominance was finally rewarded with a deserved goal when at a penalty corner Danny Gibney pushed the ball to Ross Crerar and Crerar unleashed an unstoppable shot into the goal. Falkirk nearly made it 2-1 when Robert Spekman saw his looping flick at goal from a penalty corner narrowly skim past the post. On the stroke of half-time Jamie O’Neill was to produce a breathtaking reaction save which had both teams applauding to ensure a tie at the interval. The early spell in the second half was a balanced affair with both teams firing shots wide of the target and both goalkeepers forced to make good saves. Falkirk came close to making it 2-1 when Alan McDonald produced a lung-bursting lung and cross but Gibney couldn’t quite get the contact he required, with his back-stick deflection fizzing past the post. However it was Carnegie who made it 2-1, when a brilliant Jamie O’Neill save rebounded to the Carnegie striker, who couldn’t miss from 1 yard out. Falkirk again lifted their game however, just when it looked like they were going to equalise, they were permanently reduced to 10 players for needless descent. Carnegie made their numerical advantage count as they quickly scored a decisive 3rd goal. Falkirk did create chances with John Russell and Alan McDonald coming close but in the end Carnegie held on for a victory.
