Match reports for 17/2/08

Giffnock III 0
Falkirk GHG III 5

After a Saturdays very impressive win, the 3rd XI were in a buoyant mood ahead for their Reserve Plate last 16 tie against Giffnock 3s on Sunday. However Saturdays exertions seemed to have taken their toll on the side, with 2 players having to pull out of the match due to injuries and so it was a side with no substitutes which made the journey West. Early in the game Falkirk had complete control of the crucial midfield area, with Robert Spekman in particular completely running the show along with Liam Robertson. It was therefore no surprise when Falkirk took an early lead following a period of sustained pressure. A lovely passing move involving Hamish Hutchison and Craig Callahan, saw Robertson find space in the centre of the D and he coolly slotted the ball under the goalkeeper. It wasn’t long before Falkirk doubled their lead when another excellent move saw Ross Drummond burst into the D only to see his shot well saved, but Robert Spekman was on hand to hammer the ball into the bottom corner from the rebound. Giffnock seemed to lift their game, however they could not create any clear opportunities with Willie Simpson, Scott Usher and Mathew Morley all defending exceptionally well, to prevent any chances at goal. As the half wore on, Falkirk were again in control and Liam Robertson scored his second of the game following a quick break. From the start of the second half, Giffnock looked more determined and Jamie O’Neill was called upon to make a save. However, the passing hockey played by Falkirk was causing Giffnock all sorts of problems and it was from a really well worked move that Liam Robertson hit the post and Craig Callahan, on his first game of competitive hockey in 2 years, was on hand to slot home the ball into the back of the net to make it 4-0. Falkirk continued to press and only some brilliant goalkeeping denied Ross Drummond and Ross Dickson, however Falkirk did score once more, when another excellent move saw Robert Spekman play the ball into the feet of Ross Drummond, who cleverly played a subtle pass to Liam Robertson, who released a magnificent dipping flick into the bottom of the goals from the top of the D to complete an excellent hatrick. An excellent result for the Falkirk side, who moved the ball around very well at times and can be very proud with their efforts on both Saturday and Sunday this weekend.
