Match reports for 20/1/08

Edinburgh Uni VI 2
Falkirk GHG III 0

The 3rd XI travelled to Peffermill for their first match of 2008, to play Edinburgh University in a match that had been rearranged from the previous week. With 7 regular players missing from the line-up, Captain Scott McNeill turned to the clubs youth, with only 4 players in the squad over the age of 21. The game couldn’t have gotten off to a worse start for the Falkirk side when they quickly conceded a goal from a penalty corner, and then Edinburgh University made it 2-0 soon after. However, Falkirk didn’t give in and Alan McDonald narrowly shot wide, before Iain Cameron twice got his shots on target but neither could break the deadlock. The unusual pitch was causing problems for Falkirk and it took them 20 minutes to properly get to grip with the bouncy surface. The second half saw Falkirk continue their pressure with Ross Dickson, Stuart McNeill and Alan McDonald all coming close, but all were denied by an Edinburgh University goalkeeper in excellent form. Ewan Jeffrey, who played extremely well in only his second game for the 3s was also denied by a point blank save from the Edinburgh University goalkeeper. In the end it was a case of missed chances costing the Falkirk side, who despite playing well and creating chances simply couldn’t get the ball into the net.
