Falkirk GHG II 2This away fixture saw Falkirk play some of the best hockey of the season with the entire team working tirelessly to ensure a victory. David Sharp opened the scoring two minutes before the break finally breaking the deadlock in a half that had been domintated by Falkirk. James Robertson found the net in the scond half beatting the Watsonians keeper who had pulled off a string of excellent saves to deny Falkirk a bigger lead.
The 3rd XI travelled to Goldenacre for a very difficult away game against Alloa, a side who had been relegated from Division One the previous year. It was close to a full-strength side that made the outing, with only John Russell missing from the line-up. The game was very even at the start with Falkirk having more possession but Alloa looking more dangerous on the ball. It was Falkirk who took the lead after 10 minutes from a penalty corner, when Danny Gibney saw his first flick at goal saved by the keeper and Gibney was the quickest to the rebound and steered it into the bottom corner. However Falkirk’s lead didn’t last long when Alloa equalised from a penalty corner. Both sides knew a second goal would set the tone of the game and the midfield trio of Robert Spekman, Craig Gove and Ross Dickson looked in control as they battled to find an opening. It was soon to come when Jonny Anderson won a penalty corner. Gibney played a diagonal ball to young Dickson who did brilliantly well to control it on the back-stick and fire a cross across the face of goal where the waiting Jonny Anderson forced the ball over the line with a fine finish. Alloa again lifted their game and again equalised and on the stroke of half-time nearly took the lead, only to find Jamie O’Neill in goal in top form with a superb save. The second half began like the first, with both sides working hard and it was Falkirk who got the crucial third goal when the pacey Alan McDonald and Jonny Anderson linked well, leaving McDonald one-on one with the goalkeeper and the Falkirk winger fired the ball into the corner from the top of the D with a superb finish. Alloa again tried to lift their game but the defence of Falkirk held strong and in particular Craig Gove worked amazingly hard for the side, as they prevented any openings. Falkirk were soon to put the game beyond doubt when Gibney and Anderson linked well giving Anderson an easy finish for his second of the match. The 3rd XI were to add icing to their proverbial cake when the impressive Ross Crerar produced a top-drawer finish from the top of the D to make it 5-2. A brilliant performance for the 3rd XI who played some excellent passing hockey in the process.Watsonians IV 4
Falkirk GHG IV 4A changed side went to Tipperlinn for a late start, and right from the outset decided to take the game to Watsonians coming close on at least 2 occasions in the first 5 mins, it was however from a lucky break and deflection in the goalmouth that Watsons took the lead. Undeterred Falkirk pushed on only to be thwarted in front of goal, but a pass through the D saw a whippet like run by David Morton scoring at the back post, again Falkirk kept pushing and got very unlucky in front of goal with shots either miraculously saved or just missing the target. Watsonians equalised after breaking through two tackles at the top of the D and saw a deflection lobbed in to the Falkirk goal evading a stranded keeper. Falkirk pushed on with lovely passing and moving from the whole midfield and forward lines which saw Ewan Jeffray grab the second The second half was the same story with Falkirk having all the pressure and no luck then Watsonians grabbed 2 goals and things started to look bleak, but the Bairns never gave up and harried all the way. Stevie Sutton scored with 5 mins to go when he put a hard shot passed the keeper from a short corner and with 1 minute to go a lightning run from young Ewan Jeffray sold the dummy to the keeper and grabbed the equaliser.
