Match reports for 25/4/09

Greenock 1
Falkirk GHG 2

Falkirk travelled to Largs knowing that only a victory would guarantee their 2nd division status, and despite a positive start, they were unable to get the early breakthrough that would have calmed their nerves. Greenock had chances to open the scoring, but a combination of good goalkeeping and poor finishing kept the scoreline blank. The home side made no mistake at the start of the second half, with a sweeping move down the right wing that resulted in the ball being forced home at the back post. Falkirk responded to the situation by pushing an extra forward on, and thought they had equalised when Michael Watson smashed a reverse stick volley into the roof of the net, only for the umpire to award a penalty corner for an infringement seconds earlier. However, from the resulting corner, Craig Strachan slotted home a reverse stick shot from the top of the box to draw the visitors level. The game was turned around minutes later when Craig Strachan ripped another penalty corner high into the Greenock net to give Falkirk the lead. With time running out, Falkirk ensured that there could be no last minute despair as they controlled possession in the corner at the Greenock end to see the clock run out.
